Agawam Grapes
Agawam (Vitis labrusca x V. vinifera). Released about 1856. Bred by E.S. Rogers of Salem, MASS.The quality of this red grape was considered good in it's day, though it would be only an average grape at best among today's grapes. Of all the Rogers' hybrids, this was the only one with perfect flowers. All the others of this group have female flowers. The berries are about the size of good Concord, and with a similar flavor. Nothing special about this antique grape other than the historical interest. One nursery sold "Lindley," as Agawam for many years. However, while Agawam is self-fertile, Lindley will not set fruit unless there is a perfect flowered or male vareity nearby to pollinate it. Most productive when pruned to canes. A R T M
